How about a Great Schlep for homosexuals?

Thanks to an Obma victory, the wall may be cracking in the racial divide inhabiting the US.  By no means has the wall fallen, but clearly the country has taken a few good swings at starting some cracks.

If race is a dwindling issue, who will society aim their prejudice energy at?  Are Gays and Lesbians the next group to be at the bottom of the ladder.  A great deal has been made with California’s victorious Prop 8, but we must not lose sight similar legislation was successful in 2 other states.   In addition, voters were asked to vote on similar legislation in the 2004 election.  All successful.

Such ignorance by caucasions should not be a surprise to anyone.  Given the history of the caucasion; hate, prejudice and neglect has been a staple.  The continuation of this behaviour by minorities can be described as nothing more than a shame.

Jews, Blacks (African American), and any other minority have at one time or another has been treated in the most inhumane manner imaginable.  Concentration Camps, Slavery, The Crusades, being the ‘new’ people as a result of immigration, all of these groups know what it is like to be treated with hate.  So why project that hate to someone else when you have known it in its worst form?

“For his wife Selma, 87, as for many Jewish Americans, the ties to the Democratic party were also umbilical. Yet she did not like the idea of an African American president…”     -guardian.co.uk

Selma’s remarks may not longer hold true, as Florida and othe states ushered in the Obama era.  Unfortunately a ‘great schelp’ is not on the horizon for the Gay/lesbian movement.

In a twisted sign of togetherness, no matter the race, color, or religion,  the [ignorant] majority of society can all agree to hate homesexuals.   How can anyone argue this point.  Society sees them as different.  Their behaviours effect no one but themselves, but just as skin color, sex, and religion has been enough to create divisions, now who a person loves is grounds for hate.

Shame on those who had to sit at the back of the bus.  Shame on those who have relatives with marks on their arms from WWII.   Learn from the your dark experiences in your history and remember how it felt.

  1. What in the World are you talking about? People don’t have to agree with gays getting married! Marriage is defined as between a man and woman.

I have no problem with gays having a civil union with the legal benefits to bury, have insurance, have power of attorney and the likes as married couples. But I can’t see the definition of marriage being overturned.

  3. Just because you feel marriage should be between a man and an woman, does not make it right.

I find it shocking when someone is part of a group, who has been kept down for so long simply due to skin color, would keep that type of ignorance alive.

Not too long ago many many folks in your country thought you were nothing more than an animal. Was that right?

All these people want to do is display their love for each other like anyone else. This does not effect you in any way whatsoever. So that being the case, you are simply being HATEful to a group because you do not like them. For no other reason.

  4. i’m going to be blogging about proposition 8 soon - but i want to consider it a bit more before diving in

the long and the short of it for me - we’re either all free, or none of us are

i was one who felt for a long time that the word “marriage” wasn’t important…that so long as gay couples had the same rights in law as straight couples, what you called it didn’t matter…i would say things like “if somebody feels that the word is important, why rub their nose in it?”

the passage of prop 8 changed my mind

it is ironic, for instance, that the mormons put millions of dollars into passing this proposition to protect “the sanctity of marriage” - this from an institution that not too long ago abandoned polygamy only in order to win statehood for utah

being roman catholic, i am also very disappointed in my own church’s leaders’ failure to recognize the slippery slope under their feet when they advocate religious notions as civil law

we cannot put our rights, as americans and as human beings, up for ratification

if someone were to say “civil unions are an option for non-catholics, but to call it marriage it has to be blessed by the church” and they were able to get that passed into law there would be riots in the streets

this question is essentially the same

  5. As the father of a gay son, i think the progress we’ve made in the last several years is amazing. If you look at the demographics, the older crowd was where the opposition was. The attitude among people under 30 especially is that sexual preference is no big deal and they don’t understand why it is even an issue. This is a setback for rights, but in the long run tolerance is going to win.

  6. Love your site, great info on the subject as well…. Tks
